The aim of marketing is meet & satisfy target customers' needs and wants.
Different definitions on marketing has been given by different authors. Such as according to Philip Kotler "Marketing is human activity directed at satisfying needs and wants through exchange processes."
In the U.K., a very similar definition was given by the charted Institute of Marketing. "Marketing is the management process responsible for identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer requirements profitably."
