PhD scholarship-The University of Queensland

Location: United Kingdom

School of Public Health

The University of Queensland was, in 1936, the first university in the English-speaking world to establish a Department of Social Medicine. This evolved in the 1950’s to the Department of Preventative and Social Medicine and the School was formally established in 2001 to improve health outcomes through learning, discovery and engagement. The School of Public Health has recently been ranked as the top Public Health school in Australasia in the US News Global university rankings. We are a global leader in improving the health of populations in a changing and inequitable world.

The School’s strategy is centered on academic performance and a commitment to excellence in teaching. We offer programs and courses in all major fields of population and public health to almost 1000 postgraduate and undergraduate students. Our MPH is the only accredited program in the Australasia and S.E. Asia region (APHEA and ASPHER) and one of the few to offer a dual MD/MPH degree. More than 100 research higher degree (PhD and MPhil) students actively contribute to the School’s vibrant research culture while receiving comprehensive preparation for academic careers or leadership roles in public health.

Our research and engagement strategy is focused on making a real impact on some of the world’s most pressing health challenges. Our major research and engagement themes are:health promotion; climate change and environmental health; mental health; blood borne viruses; women’s health; and, health systems.

About This Opportunity

We are offering two scholarships to exceptional domestic students who wish to undertake a PhD project at the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence on Women and Non-communicable diseases: Prevention and Detection at The University of Queensland.

Our first project will conduct a comprehensive assessment of Australian Women’s use of health services across life stages, identifying key factors influencing distinct patterns of health service use and assessing the comparative impact of NCDs on health service use.

Our second project will undertake a systematic investigation into the associations of established and emerging risk factors at each stage of women’s lives (including early life, young adults, main reproductive stage, menopausal transition and later life) with NCD incidence (using both prevalence and age at onset of each NCD), including multimorbidity.

The project descriptions above is a brief outline of what the project hopes to achieve. Supervisors will work with candidates to develop a PhD project that is in line with the candidate’s research interests and also fits within the overall scope of the outlined projects.

Students will enrol through The University of Queensland’s Faculty of Medicine.

The successful applicants will be based at the NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence on Women and Non-communicable Diseases: Prevention and Detection in Herston, Brisbane.

Earmarked scholarships are funded by the Australian Government to assist PhD students with their living costs and tuition fees. Scholarships are offered for projects that are aligned with recently awarded Category 1 research grants. They offer students the opportunity to work with leading researchers and contribute to large projects of national significance.

PhD Studentship - Epigenetic Features of the Genome (Fixed Term)

Location: United Kingdom

The Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute (CRUK CI) is a joint venture between the Charity, Cancer Research UK, and the University of Cambridge. The Institute has excellent state-of-the-art facilities and research ranges from basic cancer biology and computational biology through to translational research and clinical application. Graduate students play a pivotal role in the continuing success of our research programmes and gaining a studentship in the Institute is an excellent opportunity to start a research career in an environment committed to training outstanding cancer research scientists of the future. For further information, go to: https://www.cruk.cam.ac.uk/jobs-and-studentships/postgraduate-study

Professor Sir Shankar Balasubramanian, Head of the research group studying the Chemical Biology of Nucleic Acids, wishes to appoint a student to work on the project entitled: Epigenetic Features of the Genome.

Project details

The lab exploits both chemistry and biology to address fundamental mechanisms of genome function (http://www-balasubramanian.ch.cam.ac.uk). While many genetic determinants of cancer are known, alternative nucleic acid secondary structures and chemically modified DNA (or RNA) bases can be epigenetic features of nucleic acids that are important to normal biology and in oncogenesis. The project will explore chemical modifications as epigenetic features and how these influence secondary structure formation and function in the genome of normal and cancer cells. The scope of the project may include exploring the formation and dynamics of G-quadruplex structures and modified DNA bases in the genome and their roles in gene expression, DNA replication and genome stability. We have developed methods to show that G-quadruplexes are enriched in cancer-related genes and have a profound impact on transcription (e.g. Nature Genetics, 2016, 48, 1267-1272; Nature Biotechnology, 2015, 33, 877-881). We have also developed genome-wide mapping and sequencing of modified bases and are now exploring further base modifications (e.g. Genome Biology, 2017, 18:23; Nature Chemical Biology, 2015, 11, 555-557).

Preferred skills/knowledge

The student will be highly motivated, capable of independent thought and have excellent communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively. Ideally, the candidate will have a strong background in molecular biology and/or biochemistry. Knowledge of the chemistry and biology of nucleic acids would be beneficial.

Funding

This project is funded by a Cancer Research UK studentship that includes full funding for University and College fees and a stipend of £19,000 per annum.

Eligibility

No nationality restrictions apply to Cancer Research UK funded studentships. Applications are invited from recent graduates or final year undergraduates who hold or expect to gain a first/upper second class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject from any recognised university worldwide.

How to apply

All applications need to be made using the University Applicant Portal. Please visit: https://www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/directory/cvcrpdmsc for further information about the course and to access the applicant portal.

To complete your on-line application, you need to provide the following:

Reference Request: The names and contact details of two academic referees who have agreed to act on your behalf.

Research: If you wish to be considered for more than one studentship, please enter the names of all of the supervisors you wish to consider your application in the 'Research summary' text box. If you only wish your application to be considered by a single supervisor, then please enter their name in the 'Research Supervisor' text box. Please describe your past 'Research experience' in the appropriate text box.

Course Specific Questions: Your statement of interest (limit of 2,500 characters) should explain why you wish to be considered for the studentship and which qualities and experience you will bring to the role. Please also state how you learned of the studentship.

Supporting Documents: Please upload your CV (PDF file), which should include a list of the examinations taken at undergraduate level and if possible, your examination results

Deadline

The closing date for applications is 27 February 2020.

Please quote reference SW22332 on your application and in any correspondence about this vacancy.

Research position

PhD student (fully funded)

Location: Sweden

The position as a PhD (licentiate) student is announced as part of a research project entitled “Urban agriculture as blue-green infrastructure: Can it feed bodies and minds while protecting waterways?” Urban agriculture is increasing in popularity but is an understudied green infrastructure type in terms of nutrients. This project will fill part of this knowledge gap by looking at urban agriculture and nutrient cycling in Linköping Sweden and Minneapolis USA. This includes working with spatial data as well as setting up and running monitoring programs to assess nutrient flows in urban and periurban cultivation systems. Data collection will be informed by stakeholder workshops and interviews to identify further benefits of such systems and how to adapt them to multiple goals. Hence, the PhD (licentiate) student will work in a multidisciplinary environment with close connections to the society and in communication with relevant stakeholders.

The holder of the advertised position is expected to conduct field and laboratory work to quantify the flows of nitrogen and phosphorus through urban agriculture, with a focus on water quality. The objective is to better understand if urban farming could act as a source of pollution.
