2 Post Doc Positions in Department of Strategy and Innovation

Location: Denmark

Copenhagen Business School invites applications for 2 Post Doc Positions at the Department of Strategy and Innovation. Expected starting date is 1 May 2020.

The Department of Strategy and Innovation has an emphasis on Strategy and Innovation - as indicated by the name - but there is equal emphasis on Entrepreneurship and International Business. The four areas are the pillars that the department is resting on in its teaching and research activities. The number of staff in the department is approximately 80. This includes about 45 faculty members (professors, associate professors, tenure track assistant professors), 7 administrative staff members, and 30 members of staff who are hired on temporary contracts as research assistants, post docs or PhD students.

The department’s ambition is to create an internationally leading environment for research and teaching in strategy, innovation, entrepreneurship, and international business. The theoretical foundation for research in these areas is eclectic, combining strategy and/or internationalization theory with insights from economics, sociology, psychology, and economic geography. Methodologically, the department places considerable emphasis on the solid application of empirical methods, featuring qualitative interview studies, surveys, register data, or experiments.

The teaching of the department is very diverse across programs and areas and largely falls within the four research areas of the department, i.e. strategy, innovation, entrepreneurship and international business.

The post doc positions are time-limited for 4 years and connected to the research activities of Professor Nicolai Foss. The post doc will be subject to a formal annual performance review. The post doc positions will include approximately one year of teaching activites in the context of the Department's teaching portfolio.

The projects are:

Please indicate clearly in your application which project you are applying for.

Post doc 1: Entrepreneurship

The postdoctoral fellow will join the ongoing research of Professor Nicolai Foss under the overall theme of “the judgment-based view of entrepreneurship” an emerging approach to entrepreneurship pioneered by Professor Nicolai Foss (in cooperation with other scholars). The focus of this work is on understanding how entrepreneurial judgment shapes contractual relations, ownership structures and relations to stakeholders (e.g., financiers). This stream is increasingly taking off empirically and in terms of modeling and the postdoctoral fellow will work on these frontier issues. Many projects are ongoing or underway, and the successful applicant will work on a number of these and will have the opportunity to help shaping new projects. Relevant projects include “Institutions and Entrepreneurial Survival,” “Entrepreneurial Judgment and Financing of Ventures,” and “Billionaire Entrepreneurs.”

The ideal candidate for this Postdoctoral Fellow will be a recent PhD graduate with a deep interest in this domain who can provide research support in terms of literature reviews, analyses, “lab manager” role to coordinate other research support, and joining as an author on various projects. Strong technical skills in empirical analysis, in addition to a thorough training in the relevant research literature (strategy, entrepreneurship, and innovation) are desirable. Skills in modelling (both closed form-modeling and simulation methods) are also highly desirable.

Post doc 2: Top Management, Organization, and Firm Performance

The postdoctoral fellow will join in the ongoing research of Professor Nicolai Foss on the theme of “Top Management and Firm Outcomes”. The focus of this work is to use large datasets to understand how top management behaviors and demographics shape firm level outcomes such as growth, boundary changes, adaptability and innovation. Many projects are ongoing or underway, and the successful applicant will work on a number of these and will have the opportunity to help shaping new projects. Relevant projects include “Woman Managers and Innovation”, “Top Management Characteristics and Firm Boundaries”, and “Top Managers and Open Innovation”.

The ideal candidate for this Postdoctoral Fellow will be a recent PhD graduate with a deep interest in this domain who can provide research support in terms of literature reviews, analyses, “lab manager” role to coordinate other research support, and joining as an author on various projects. Strong technical skills in empirical analysis, in addition to a thorough training in the relevant research literature (strategy, entrepreneurship, innovation) are desirable.

Qualifications for both positions:

  • Applicants must have completed a PhD in Management or related social science discipline before the beginning the fellowship. Prior work (including but not limited to dissertation) must involve working with large datasets.
  • Excellent academic record and work ethic required.
  • Excellent organizational and oral/written communication skills required.
  • Enthusiasm for research required. The ideal candidate will be thinking of this position as a platform to build skills towards taking on a research professorship in the future.
  • Willingness to move to and live in Denmark.
  • Working knowledge of Stata is desirable.

For further information about the research projects, please contact Professor Nicolai J. Foss: njf.si@cbs.dk.

Information about the department is available at www.cbs.dk/si.

Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the Central Academic Organization. A small personal research budget for travel and conference participation will be available. Information about CBS as a work place is available at https://www.cbs.dk/en/about-cbs/jobs-cbs.

Wallenberg Travel Grants - Ongoing

Application Deadline: Ongoing

It is now possible to apply for funding for international travels to conferences and research visits for young researchers from the Wallenberg Foundation.

In 1967, in conjunction with the fiftieth anniversary of the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, the board authorised the so-called jubilee donation, which is primarily intended to fund travel by younger researchers. This appropriation was later extended, since 1997 by the board's annual decisions.

The appropriation is placed at the disposal of the Vice-Chancellor to "primarily benefit scholarships for such travel as best promotes a personal exchange of scientific knowledge to the benefit of Swedish research."

Applications can be submitted throughout the year. Applicants ought to be aware that these travel grants are in great demand, and as a consequence the total cost of a single trip can seldom be awarded. In order to fulfil the donor's stipulations, in general the trip must promote research. This means, of course, that among other things applicants must normally have documented scientific activities of their own in order to be considered.

The following criteria are taken into account when awarding Wallenberg funding:

The grants are intended for younger researchers and doctoral students

The trip shall promote research

Researchers who have not previously received a grant are given precedence

A personal scientific contribution is a requirement (see form, 'mandatory')

The grants are intended for travel costs and conference fees abroad, not in Sweden

Costs for accommodation and family members are not awarded

Special application form

Remember to enclose the documents stipulated on the form. The form and enclosures should be sent to:

Anna Tjernberg, Planning Office

Email: anna.tjernberg@umu.se

We look forward to receiving your application!

Research position

Post-doctoral Position: Synthesis of Colloidal Metamaterials for Ultrasonic Acoustics: Anisotropic Soft Acoustic Metamaterials University of Bordeaux

Location: France

Research project

Metamaterials constitute an emerging class of artificial materials, structured at the mesoscopic scale and which present extraordinary properties in terms of the propagation of (acoustic or electromagnetic) waves. Expected potential applications are numerous: negative refraction, which could give access to planar lens (without aberrations) [1], sub-wavelength resolution, acoustic or electromagnetic cloaking effects etc… [2]. We recently proposed and formulated a new material constituted of porous polymer beads, which, once dispersed into an aqueous phase, give birth to negative values of the acoustic index [3]. The identified porous systems, realized using emulsion templating methods developed in our lab [4], appear to be excellent candidates for the fabrication of various acoustic devices when used, for example, as basic elements in materials exhibiting highly anisotropic behavior. The aim of this project is thus the synthesis and formulation of highly anisotropic materials involving porous polymer materials. The project is funded by the US Office of Naval Research and is part of a collaboration involving both a theoretical part, which will be led by Daniel Torrent (University of Castellone) and an experimental acoustic part conducted by a team of acousticians located on the Bordeaux Campus in another laboratory (Institute of Mechanics & Engineering).

Scientific surrounding

The postdoc will integrate the dynamics created around the project on soft materials for acoustics that is now on since almost 10 years on the Bordeaux Campus (with fundings from various agencies like ANR, Labex AMADEUS, US Air Force and now US ONR). The postdoctoral fellow should be attracted by pluridisciplinary projects at the boundary between synthesis, formulation and acoustics. The project will be developed in the Centre de Recherche Paul Pascal physical-chemistry lab (CRPP - UMR 5031) under the supervision of Prof Olivier Mondain-Monval. Close collaboration will also carry on with the CNRS-Solvay Laboratory of the Future (LOF) for microfluidics aspects and with the Institute of Mechanics of Engineering for acoustic measurements. Acoustic measurements will be performed as collaboration with another postdoctoral researcher localized at the Institute of Mechanics on the Bordeaux University Campus.

Research background

The candidate should be an experimentalist with a strong expertise in physical chemistry and, if possible in soft matter/complex fluids. The candidate should also be attracted by the pluridisciplinar aspect of our project. Specific knowledge of polymer materials synthesis and emulsion formulation is not compulsory but would be appreciated. Funding is for one year with a possible extension depending on the project advancement.

Postdoctoral Researcher: Electrochemistry with Near-ambient-Pressure XPS at SOLEIL Synchrotron

Location: France

X-Ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (X-ray) is a powerful tool for physicochemical characterization. It allows both basic and chemical analysis, giving information on the electronic structure of surfaces and their reactivity. Until recently, the need for ultrahigh vacuum limited the XPS study of surface reactivity to static systems, where the ex-situ reaction was characterized post-mortem, or for systems evolving little over time. Recent technical developments on photoelectron analyzers overcome the gap pressure leading to the so-called Near Ambient Pressure XPS (NAPXPS) and open new opportunities for studies surface reactions in operando. The NAP-XPS of Sorbonne Université is the unique device in France that allows operando XPS measurement under reaction conditions up to a few mbars. Its position at the TEMPO beamline on the SOLEIL synchrotron source makes it one the most efficient in the world. The project focus on the development of an advanced electrochemistry cell for in situ XPS measurements. This advanced tool will be used to unravel the mechanisms of the electrochemical Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) on cobalt-containing polyoxometallates which have shown to be promising Water Oxidation Catalysts (WOCs) as an alternative to precious metal oxide catalysts.

Position :

The position is between a consortium of three laboratories of Sorbonne Université* and is localized at SOLEIL synchrotron in a highly international research environment.  This position could start in autumn 2019. This is a one year funding from the labex Michem but we are looking for additional funds to extend it for 2/3 years. The post-doc will have in charge the design and construction of the in situ cell in close collaboration with the consortium. He or she will participate to the synchrotron campaigns (SOLEIL, BESSY, MAX IV) of the teams and lead his/her own research.

Required Qualifications :

PhD in Physical Chemistry or related area with notions of electrochemistry.

Experience and knowledge in synchrotron radiation techniques will be appreciated.

Good communication skills in both written and spoken English.

Application :

The applications have to be sent by e-mail to:

Postdoctoral Position - Toxicology/Microbiology - Xenobiotics Microbial Metabolism

Location: France

The human gut microbiome is recognized as a key player in host health. Over the last 5 years, together with gastroenterologists and immuno-oncologists, we highlighted the crucial role of the gut microbiota in response to several drugs, such as chemo- and immunotherapeutic agents. Within our translational Research projects, a key objective is to decipher the reciprocal impact of xenobiotics (endocrine disruptors, drugs…) on the gut ecosystem functions and species/microorganisms, to determine to which extent this will consequently affect human health or disease trajectories.

To reach these goals, the PhylHom lab applies meta-omics technologies (amplicons, shotgun and RNA sequencing, metabolomics) combined with bacterial culture in anaerobic chamber and in silico bioinformatics and modeling.

Missions and candidate’s ideal profile.

The main mission of the Postdoctoral Researcher will be to target a specific xenobiotic/drug family and assess both its impact on the human gut microbial ecosystem and the pathway and secondary products of its degradation. Subsequent impact on host physiology may be studied in animal models (rodents, pigs…).

The project requires skills in either: i) toxicology (or ecotoxicology) or pharmacology, or ii) anaerobic microbial ecology. Experience in meta-Omics is not mandatory, yet demonstrated personal interest in these approaches and bioinformatics/biostatistics would be a strong asset for the project.

Possible broader areas of research might include exposome/exposure biology, mechanisms of xenobiotics action and defense, or microbiome-xenobiotic interactions influencing host susceptibility in animal models. Candidates should hold a PhD and be proficient in English.
